The Sacred Navagraha Shanti Ritual
In Vedic tradition, the Navagraha (nine celestial bodies) govern every aspect of human life — from health and wealth to relationships and spiritual evolution. When one or more planets are afflicted in your birth chart (Kundali), they create Graha Dosha — planetary blemishes that manifest as obstacles, health problems, financial difficulties, or relationship conflicts.
This 15-day ritual, rooted in ancient Agama Shastra and Tantra traditions, uses the power of Nava Dhaniyams (nine sacred grains) to systematically appease each planet and neutralize malefic influences. It begins on Purnima (Full Moon) and concludes on Amavasya (New Moon) — utilizing the waning lunar cycle to symbolically diminish negative planetary effects.
Understanding the Nine Grains (Nava Dhaniyams)
Each of the nine grains corresponds to a specific planet:
- Wheat (Gehun): Sun (Surya) — governs the soul, authority, and vitality
- Rice (Chawal): Moon (Chandra) — governs the mind, emotions, and mother
- Red Lentil (Masoor Dal): Mars (Mangal) — governs courage, energy, and blood
- Green Gram (Moong Dal): Mercury (Budha) — governs intellect and communication
- Chickpea (Chana Dal): Jupiter (Guru) — governs wisdom, children, and dharma
- White Lentil (Urad Dal): Saturn (Shani) — governs karma, discipline, and longevity
- Kidney Beans (Rajma) / Sesame: Rahu — governs illusions, foreign connections, obsession
- Horse Gram (Kulthi): Ketu — governs spirituality, past karma, and liberation
- White Rice (Chawal): Venus (Shukra) — governs love, beauty, and art
Preparation Before the Ritual
Before beginning the 15-day practice, observe these preparations:
- Obtain small quantities of all nine grains (approximately 100g each)
- Keep a clean copper or brass plate (thali) dedicated to this ritual
- Choose a fixed time each morning — ideally during Brahma Muhurta (4:00–5:30 AM)
- Maintain vegetarian diet and avoid alcohol during the 15-day period
- Begin the ritual on Purnima (Full Moon day) — check the Hindu calendar (Panchang) for the next Purnima
The 15-Day Ritual Process
Daily Practice (Days 1–15)
Each morning, perform the following sequence:
- Purification: Take a bath and wear clean clothes. Face East while performing the ritual.
- Arrangement: Place all nine grains in separate small bowls arranged in a circle on your brass plate.
- Lighting: Light a ghee diya (lamp) in the center of the arrangement.
- Mantra recitation: Chant the Navagraha Stotra or the individual planet's beej mantra 108 times using a Rudraksha or Tulsi mala.
- Offering: After chanting, take a pinch from each grain and offer it into the ghee lamp flame (symbolizing Agni — the divine messenger to the planets).
- Distribution: At the end of each day's ritual, take the remaining grains and feed them to birds, cows, or leave them at the base of a Peepal tree.
Specific Planet Days
While the daily practice addresses all nine planets, each day from Day 1 to Day 9 focuses on a specific planet. Use a larger quantity of the corresponding grain and chant that planet's mantra with extra devotion:
- Day 1 (Sunday): Focus on Sun — offer wheat
- Day 2 (Monday): Focus on Moon — offer rice
- Day 3 (Tuesday): Focus on Mars — offer red lentil
- Day 4 (Wednesday): Focus on Mercury — offer green gram
- Day 5 (Thursday): Focus on Jupiter — offer chickpea
- Day 6 (Friday): Focus on Venus — offer white rice
- Day 7 (Saturday): Focus on Saturn — offer black lentil
- Day 8: Focus on Rahu — offer sesame
- Day 9: Focus on Ketu — offer horse gram
- Days 10–15: Combined practice for all nine planets
