In Ayurveda and Jyotish, the human body and mind are governed by three fundamental energies or bio-elements called Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Understanding your predominant Dosha (Prakriti) is the key to lasting health and balance.
The concept of the Tridosha is built upon the foundational Vedic belief that everything in the universe is composed of five base elements (Panchamahabhuta). These elements combine in specific pairs to form the three Doshas.
Every person has a unique combination of these three energies. While we all have some of each, one or two usually dominate our constitution.
वात
Vata is the principle of movement. It governs all movement in the mind and body—blood flow, elimination of wastes, breathing, and the movement of thoughts.
Dry, Light, Cold, Rough, Subtle, Mobile
Nervous system, colon, bones, joints, hearing.
पित्त
Pitta is the principle of transformation and heat. It governs digestion, absorption, assimilation, nutrition, metabolism, body temperature, and intelligence.
Hot, Sharp, Light, Liquid, Spreading
Digestion, metabolism, eyes, blood, skin.
कफ
Kapha is the principle of structure and cohesion. It forms the body's structure (bones, muscles, fat) and provides the 'glue' that holds the cells together.
Heavy, Slow, Cool, Oily, Smooth, Dense
Structure, lubrication, immunity, fat, bodily fluids.
Ayurveda and Jyotish are sister sciences. While Ayurveda manages the body and mind in the present, Jyotish maps out karmic tendencies over time. In a birth chart, the ascendant (Lagna) sign, the position of the Moon, and the most dominant planets often reveal a person's natural Ayurvedic constitution (Prakriti). Afflicted planets frequently manifest as imbalances in their corresponding doshas (Vikriti).
