Jupiter (Guru or Brihaspati) is the most benefic planet in the Vedic system — the "Deva Guru" (Teacher of Gods). It is the planet of dharma, wisdom, spirituality, children, and long-distance travel. Wherever Jupiter sits in the chart, it expands and blesses that area of life.
Jupiter transits through one zodiac sign per year (approximately 13 months per sign), making its annual transit (Guru Peyarchi) a major event in Hindu astrology. When Jupiter transits a favorable house from the natal Moon, it is considered highly auspicious.
Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, which creates an almost perfect blend of nurturing wisdom. It is debilitated in Capricorn, where its expansive, idealistic nature is constrained by Saturn's sign of restriction and practicality.
The Jupiter Mahadasha lasts 16 years and is generally considered one of the most favorable periods in life. It brings prosperity, wisdom, marriage and children, spiritual growth, and recognition. The effects are strongest when Jupiter is well-placed in the birth chart. Even a weak Jupiter Mahadasha tends to have some silver linings — perhaps legal delays or over-indulgence in pleasures, but rarely the harshness of Saturn or Rahu Mahadashas.
