Mercury (Budha) is the prince of the planetary cabinet — the forever-young intellect planet. It governs everything related to the mind's expression: language, writing, mathematics, logic, journalism, commerce, and technology.
Mercury is the only planet that is both benefic and malefic depending on context. By itself, it is considered neutral — essentially a chameleon that reflects the nature of whatever planet it is conjunct with. A Mercury conjunct Jupiter becomes very benefic; conjunct Saturn, it becomes more serious and structured; conjunct Rahu, it may become deceptive.
Mercury rules two signs: Gemini (Mithuna), where it expresses quick wit and versatility; and Virgo (Kanya), where it reaches exaltation and expresses its analytical, detail-oriented nature at its peak.
The Mercury Mahadasha lasts a remarkable 17 years — the longest Mahadasha after Venus (20 years) and Saturn (19 years). This is a long period of intellectual and communicative activity. Business ventures prosper, writing and study thrive, and relationships involving information exchange become central. A weak Mercury Mahadasha can bring speech impediments, nervous disorders, skin conditions, and difficulties in business.
